Alternatives in Curriculum and Training - core program

What We Do

ACT is a full-time, site-based day program with a behavioral emphasis that has been serving clients for over 30 years. Designed to serve the special needs of those with a dual diagnosis, our approach has been successful with any who need a structured environment in which to work toward meeting individual goals and improving their community integration.

ACT stresses both personal choice and responsibility within an organized learning environment, meaning consumers are encouraged to make wise decisions and must take responsibility for the results. We believe in the inherent dignity and worth of the individual. All of us, with the proper support and environment, can make better lives for ourselves through our choices.

ACT Classes

Mornings in ACT are spent learning skills we all need for successful community integration. We provide a small group setting, which allows each participant a significant amount of personal attention and support from their instructor.
Areas of instruction include:

  • Anger Management
  • Self-Esteem
  • Community Access
  • Social Skills

Community Outings

Consumers spend the afternoon in the community, getting a chance to practice what they have learned in the morning. Outings are at a small 1:3 ratio and include a variety of locations. To encompass as many aspects of life as possible, consumers may volunteer, work, shop, and play during the afternoons.

The Step Contract

In ACT, we teach people how to cope with feelings, friendship, being a good employee and a good citizen, and how to feel proud. The ACT staff works to help people learn to behave responsibly, with the associated rights and privileges. They also learn that these rights and privileges can be taken away if adults behave inappropriately or dangerously. To accomplish these goals, we use the Step Contract and Step Program. This is designed to give consumers experience at being successful with rules and structure, and to cope with the consequences of not sticking to rules. Consumers keep track of their behavior and earn special privileges and reinforcers based on their choices. Upon admission, every client signs an agreement to participate in the Step Program and to follow the Step Contract rules.
